- Public educational forums on social justice topics
- Advocacy and collaboration regarding community issues
Opposing Hate Crimes, Working for Equity
SCCAR was formed in 1988 as Shasta County Citizens Against Racism in response to a racially motivated shooting that occurred in Redding. A group of citizens, outrages at this attack, decided it was time to publicly speak out against racism and racial violence.
SCCAR has evolved to become actively supportive of community efforts to oppose hate crimes and discrimination of all types. SCCAR now stands for Shasta County Citizens Advocating Respect. Members of SCCAR work to promote social justice and equal opportunity, and to increase awareness of the needs and concerns of all Shasta County’s varied communities.
Our Work
We provide support and advocacy for victims of discrimination as well as community education promoting respect for all.
We organize and participate in numerous community multi-cultural events.
We support the City of Redding’s “No Room for Racism” sign program and which was featured in the “Not in Our Town” video.
We maintain a collaborative relationship with local law enforcement agencies.
We help individuals with both public and private advocacy, partnering with the Redding Police Department to provide support services to victims of hate crime.
In 2009 SCCAR established the Isaac Lowe Civil Rights and Social Justice Scholarship, which is awarded yearly to local students.
We offer local speakers and other relevant resources to area educators and organizers.
We sponsor and co-sponsor events to educate the community on issues such as homelessness and unconscious bias, and we support diverse community activities in Shasta County, including the Sikh Centre multi-lingual vaccination clinics for under-served populations.
Take a Stand
Initiated during NIOT’s (Not In Our Town) National “Stand Against Hate” Week, we continue to offer our double-sided, durable yard / window signs “We Stand for Respect and Diversity” and on the reverse side “Shasta County Stands Against Hate”. SCCAR is glad to have 200 of these messages out in our community thanks to your support. Let’s get more out there. You may request one using the contact box at the bottom of the page or by emailing us at shasta.sccar@gmail.com. The signs are free but donations are appreciated.
